Description
What wild foods grow in a high alpine setting in summer? In this class, we’ll hike a trail on Boreas Pass (between Breckenridge and Como) learning edible native plants and mushrooms common to tree-line and above tree-line forests. We’ll taste along the trail, and if plants, mushrooms, or berries are flourishing, we’ll forage and prepare something to sample. Other activities may include: plant ID by group, how to use a flora, and/or something hands-on from my backpack. No matter what, it will be a full, fun day! Offered under a permit from the U.S. Forest Service. ($130)

- TIME: 9:00 AM -3:00 PM (6 hours)
- LOCATION: Boreas Pass, CO (I will send directions to registrants.)
- COST: $130/person
- BRING: LUNCH or snacks, water, camera/notepad, foraging bags (plastic/cloth grocery bag), scissors, gloves (optional), bug spray, plate/mug/silverware
- WEAR: Hiking boots/closed-toe shoes (mandatory), sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, warm/cool layers, raincoat
- KNOW:
- Driving: The dirt road to the trailhead has some washboard and rocks but is passable in a passenger car, driving slowly. If needed, based on group size, I will set meeting times & locations for participants to carpool, per USFS request.
- Hiking: This hike does not exceed 2.5 miles round-trip. It starts at 11,500 feet and is uphill on the way out. We will stop often to look at things, and to catch our breath. If you are vacationing here directly from sea level, you should acclimate to the altitude first. Please contact me if you have any concerns about your ability to participate.
